Pepper Mills: Our pepper mills are hand crafted from wood, and they use a high quality Crushgrind mechanism. This mechanism uses a ceramic burr, which is harder than steel. As a result, these mills can grind salt or hard spices in addition to pepper. The grind is adjusted using the small grey knob on the underside of the mill. If the mill ever clogs up, you can remove the burr by undoing this knob all of the way and sliding the burr off the end of the shaft. We don't recommend this mill for use with very wet salt as it can build up and clog the mechanism. It is best to let this salt dry out in an open container before using it. Our mills are finished with Tung Oil which is washable and maintenance free. Mild soap can be used to clean the mills. We don't recommend that they be immersed in the sink. The mill is filled by removing the top of the mills (the cap). Simply pull the cap upwards to remove it. If it is hard to pull off, the shaft can be lubricated with wax. We use beeswax, so you may see a little bit of beeswax residue on the shaft. This is food grade beeswax, so it is harmless. The mill can be refinished if the finish gets dull over time. Simply give it a light scuff sand with 400 grit sandpaper, and apply another coat of Tung Oil according to the manufacturer's instructions. Our favorite Tung Oil is Lee Valley's.
Salt Shakers: We make two styles of salt shakers. Our mystery salt shakers have a single hole in the bottom. The shaker is filled through the hole by pouring salt into the funnel built into the bottom. Salt is also dispensed through the same hole by shaking the shaker up and down. Inside the shaker there is a cone shape. The salt normally lies around the base of the cone, but when you shake it the salt flies up and falls down the hole. Our standard salt shakers are a bit more conventional. They have three holes in the top and a 1" hole in the bottom that is closed with a rubber plug. Just remove the plug to fill it with salt. We don't recommend either style for use with wet or coarse salt as it can plug the holes. Both shaker styles are finished in Tung oil which is washable and maintenance free. Mild soap can be used to clean the mills. We don't recommend that they be immersed in the sink. The shakers can be refinished if the finish gets dull over time. Simply give it a light scuff sand with 400 grit sandpaper, and apply another coat of Tung Oil according to the manufacturer's instructions. Our favorite Tung Oil is Lee Valley's.
French Pins Our french rolling pins are hand made from Bigleaf Maple. They are traditional french pins, which taper towards the ends for rolling pastry round. The finish is walnut oil and beeswax. The pin can be washed in soapy water in the sink, but it should not go into the dishwasher as the heat and humidity may crack it. The finish will eventually wash off. If you want to maintain the finish you can recoat the pin with walnut oil, which is available in grocery stores. If the pin ever feels rough, a quick scrub with 0000 steel wool or 400 grit sandpaper will make it smooth again.
Salad Bowls Our salad bowls are handcrafted from wood. No stain is used to change the colour. They are finished with walnut oil and beeswax. Walnut oil is food safe and will not turn rancid. Our bowls can be washed in soapy water in the sink, but they shouldn't go into the dishwasher. The heat and humidity there can crack wood. We recommend that you occasionally oil our bowls with walnut oil, which is available in grocery stores. You could also use mineral oil, which is available in drug stores. The more frequently you oil it the better the patina will become. If the bowl feels rough it can be smoothed with 400 grit sandpaper or 0000 steel wool. |
